4 ways how charity helps in ensuring food security

No matter what country, what color, what race or what gender! Having clean hygienic and nutritious food is right of every person despite their background or their identity. As human or even animals, food is one of the fundamental elements which need to survive. It is but a very basic need of ours which should be fulfilled in any condition. But still, there are millions of people around the globe which are malnourished, underfed and some even get famished i.e. they get starved to death. And that is the most inhuman way to die, providing the level of technology and progress we have made in recent decades.

That’s where the issue of food security arouses from, as still many millions of lives are lost every year owing to consumption of food which is not fit for consumption or cannot even fulfill the minimum dietary requirements of a person.

As defined by the United Nations’ Committee on World Food Security, “Security, means that all people, at all times, have physical, social, and economic access to sufficient, safe, and nutritious food that meets their food preferences and dietary needs for an active and healthy life”

Although Food security is closely related to people’s daily earnings and socioeconomic status and other varying factors such as food prices, global environment change, water, energy and agriculture growth, which are out of control of hands of many. So here are ways we can help by the charity to ensure food security if not around the globe around, around ourselves.

Donate non-perishable food:

It can be a great way by providing non-perishable food items to people who are experiencing food insecurity and have to rely on donated food items to survive. We should focus on getting healthy foods like proteins and whole grains to help them access healthy as well as a nutritious food. Another way can help is by checking beforehand what are items which the pantry in our locality needs the most.

Pick up food from local farms, stores and restaurants:

We can also offer our services by signing for volunteering to collect food from a local farmer, grocery store or restaurant which they want to donate instead of scraping as it cannot be sold or it may be surplus and would perish if not consumed in time. For the same purpose, volunteers are needed to collect and transport them to local organizations

Sign up for a shift at a food bank:

Another great way to sign up as a volunteer is at food banks which are also in constant need of individuals to sort out the donated food as well as to serve it. As a rising trend, many organizations have turned towards packing and giving away eatable in boxes for ease of doing business. We can contribute our part there as well.

Buying gift cards or from an organization which works for food security:

If we cannot find enough time for volunteering oneself, we can also resort to a much simpler way of giving charity which is buying gift cards or buying from organizations which are dedicated for the same cause and gives away from their profit to ensure food security and other such issues. Like for instance, we can take ME to WE which is a social enterprise enabling people to do good through their everyday choices. Founded in 2009 by Craig Kielburger who is a social entrepreneur and the co-founder of a family of organizations to provide economic opportunity in WE Village communities and a sustainable source of funding for WE Charity, ME to WE has grown into a global force for good.
